Starts out OK, ends poorly. As he moves towards one of the room’s alcoves, he detects a presence and approaches it slowly. The narrative is constantly stopped short with ‘I cannot bear to describe what I have seen’, and just telling us something is too awful to imagine does not automatically make it bloody scary.

Want to Read Currently Reading Read. This one’s gruesome and when Lovecraft does bother to describe anything horrible, it’s genuinely skin crawling and unpleasant. At the place where the stairs terminate into crumbled ruins, the narrator begins a long, slow climb up the tower wall, until he eventually finds a trapdoor in the ceiling, which he pushes up and climbs through.
The narrator tells of his environment: As the narrator stands alone in the room, with e screams of the party vanishing into far away echoes, he becomes frightened at what must be lurking near him. Rated this 3 stars mostly due to my amusement over the mixture of fantasy and SF elements.
